Popova Slices 1Sec Off Russian 200Fr Mark

News Round-Up:

Russia: At nationals in Moscow Veronika Popova, Yuliya Efimova and Anastasia Zueva posted strong times. Popova set a 1:56.94 national record in the 200m freestyle inside the 1:57.96 set by Yelena Sokolova in 2009; Zueva clocked 59.51 in the 100m back semi a day after after winning the dash in 27.99; and Efimova won the breaststroke dash in 30.46. Popova and Efimova joined battle in the 200m medley, the freestyle ace winning in 2:12.87 to  2:13.71.

In other action, Andrei Grechin claimed the freestyle dash in 22.13 ahead of Sergei Fesikov, 22.25, and Nikita Konovalov, 22.36; Stanislav Donets took the 200m back in 1:58.37 ahead of Arkady Vyatchanin, on 1:59.47; Nikolai Bulakhov touched out Evgeny Kulikov 7:59.77 to 7:59.81 in the 800m free; Nikolay Skvortsov won the 200m butterfly in 1:56.43; Ekaterina Seliverstova took the 1500m free in 16:32.94 just ahead of Anastasia Ivanenko, who served a doping ban, on 16:32.97; and Irina Bespalova clocked 58.99 to win the 100m butterfly.

Brazil: at a compact nationals in Rio,  Olympic and world 50m champion Cesar Cielo clocked 48.66 to win the 100m free ahead of Bruno Fratus, 49.40, and Nicholas Dos Santos, 49.59. Cielo also won the 'fly dash, on 23.68. 

Elsewhere, Tales Cerdeira took the 200m breaststroke in 2:13.35 ahead of a 2:13.70 from Henrique Barbosa; Felipe Silva clocked 1:01.44 to take the 100m ahead of Cerdeira and Barbosa, respectively on  1:01.62 and 1:01.81; Tatiana Barbosa claimed the 100 free title in 54.95; Joanna Maranhao won the 200m 'fly in 2:12.18; back from a doping ban, Daynara de Paula won the 'fly dash on 26.55; On the third day of action, Henrique Rodrigues took the 200m medley in 1:59.02, and Fabiola Molina clocked 1:00.89 for victory in the 100m backstroke.
