Syracuse Defeats West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, WV -- The Syracuse women's swimming and diving team picked up where it left off by defeating West Virginia, 153 - 134, in its first competitive meet since Dec. 1-2 at Massachusetts. Freshman Annie Tudryn (Springfield, MA) won three events to pace the Orangewomen, who improved to 4-1 on the season.

Tudryn won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.64), the 200 breaststroke (2:22.39) and the 400 individual medley (4:34.88). SU also got strong performances from freshman Megan Daney (Newtown, PA) and junior Kelly Bryon (Uxbridge, Ontario). Daney captured first place in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. She swam the 100 back in a time of 59.05 and swam the 200 back in a time of 2:05.36. Bryon won two distance events, posting a season-best time of 10:27.00 in the 1,000 freestyle and a time of 5:07.57 in the 500 freestyle.

There were no female West Virginia divers for SU's Sara Mastropole (Milford, CT) and Julie Van Deusen (Bear, DE) to compete against. Mastropole got credit for first place in the one-meter dive with a season-best score of 285.07, while Van Deusen claimed the three-meter event with a season-best score of 321.37.

The Syracuse men's swimming and diving team is now 2-3 on the season after a 164.5 - 115.5 loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday. Junior Djordje Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) won the 100 and 200 butterfly events and was also part of SU's first-place 400 medley relay team. He swam the 100 fly in a season-best time of 50.98 and touched first in the 200 fly in a matter of 1:51.92. The Orangemen's 400 medley relay team consisted of Filipovic, senior Josko Vucetic (Split, Croatia), senior Ilia Mikhailov (Alta, Sweden) and sophomore newcomer Benjamin Henri. The quartet combined for a time of 3:27.79.

Vucetic maintained his dominance in the backstroke events by winning both the 100 and 200 backstrokes against the Mountaineers. His time in the 100 backstroke was 51.65, while he recorded a time of 1:53.38 in the 200 back.

Mikhailov tied for first in the 100 breaststroke with WVU's Josh Evans. Both swimmers finished simultaneously in 58.51.

Junior Glenn Bizewski (Walnut Creek, CA) swam the 400 individual medley in a personal-best time of 4:07.69.

SU was without the services of its lone male diver, senior Adam Earle (Camillus, NY). Earle is rehabilitating injuries to his back and eardrum.

The Orangemen and Orangewomen return to Webster Pool for their last home meet of the season on Saturday, January 27 for a dual meet against Connecticut. Diving will commence at 9 a.m., while swimming gets underway at noon. Syracuse has not competed at home since October 28 versus Pittsburgh.
