Virginia and North Carolina Split Dual Meet

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va, - As expected, Atlantic Coast Conference rivals North Carolina and Virginia split their dual meet on Saturday at the UVA Aquatic and Fitness Center. Carolina's women and Virginia's men remained undefeated in ACC dual meet action.

The ninth-ranked UNC women beat 12th-ranked Virginia in dual meet action for the first time since 1998 by whipping the Cavaliers 175-125. The Carolina women are now 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC. Virginia's women fell for the first time this season and they are now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. The only loss suffered this year by UNC's women came in the season opener at #1-ranked and two-time defending NCAA champion Georgia.

Carolina junior Katie Hathaway led the Tar Heels with three individual wins while senior Erika Acuff and freshman Jessi Perruquet each had two individual wins.

Hathaway won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.85), 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.30) and 200-yard individual medley (2:02.63) while also swimming the breaststroke leg on UNC's victorious 200-yard medley relay. Acuff swam legs on both the medley relay and the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay for UNC while also winning the 100-yard butterfly (55.52) and the 50-yard freestyle (23.49). Perruquet recorded two close wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.41) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.45) while also anchoring the winning 400 free relay. UNC's other win was by senior Summer Mack in the 100-yard backstroke (55.70).

Virginia second-years Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Alison Sharp (Newton, Pa./Council Rock) paced the Cavaliers with a pair of wins apiece. Lane broke her own pool record in winning the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.21. Her former pool record in the 200 fly was 1:59.35. Lane also won the 500 free with a time of 4:47.43. Sharp swept the one and three-meter diving events with season-best scores. She totaled 271.73 points in winning the one-meter competition and then scored 279.45 points in earning the top spot on the three-meter board. Second-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) and fourth-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) rounded out Virginia's individual event winners with Bosevska taking the 1000 freestyle in 9:51.11 and Iffland winning the 200 backstroke in 2:01.79. Bosevska was also runner-up to Lane in the 500 free (4:54.44) and was second in the 200 IM (2:06.57) as well. Iffland also earned a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (56.01). First-year Jenna Bridges (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) took second in both the 100 (51.51) and 200 free (1:49.78), while first-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) was runner-up in the 1000 free (9:53.38) and 200 breast (2:20.27) and third in the 200 IM (2:07.38).

The Virginia men improved their record to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC. UNC lost for the first time since the season opener at Georgia and is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.

Sophomoer diver Stephen Krebs led the Tar Heels with two individual wins sweeping both the one-meter diving with 288.53 points and the three-meter diving with 341.93 points. Sophomore Sean Quinn swept to victory for the Tar Heels in 2:00.15 in the 200-yard breaststroke while the 400-yard medley relay team of Kert Johnson, Sean Quinn, Sebastien Moity and Michael Chenier won in 3:20.08.

Virginia first-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) led the Cavaliers to the victory by winning a pair of individual events and also swimming a leg on a winning relay. Anderson won the 50 free in 20.46 and claimed first place in the 100 free in 44.95. He also swam the leadoff leg on UVa's winning 400 free relay team that posted a time of 3:01.80. Anderson, first-years Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) and Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and fourth-year Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah/Dixie) also swam legs on the winning free relay. Johnson and Haag finished second and third in the 100 free with times of 45.71 and 46.52, respectively. Wagner was also victorious in the 200 back as he touched in 1:47.21. First-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) won both the 200 and 500 free in 1:40.07 and 4:28.17, respectively. Second-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) won the 1000 free in 9:07.25 with fourth-year teammate Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md./Sherwood) taking second in 9:07.73. Second-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) took first place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:49.70, while second-year Dan Zurowski (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop Ireton) captured first place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.22. Fourth-year Michael Fuller (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) was second in the 200 fly in 1:50.16. Third-year Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va./Woodside) placed second in the 200 back and third in the 200 IM, with times of 1:48.96 and 1:52.08, respectively.
