SJU, Rutgers and Seton Hall Split wins In Tri-Meet

JAMAICA, N.Y. - The St. John's University men's swimming team remained undefeated this season, posting wins over Rutgers and Seton Hall, while the Red Storm women fell to the Scarlet Knights and the Pirates at the Rutgers/Scarlet Aquatic Club on Friday evening. The men's team improved to 8-0 this season, while the women fall to 4-5.

The Red Storm men beat Rutgers, 154-104, and posted a 194-89 decision over Seton Hall. On the women's side, Rutgers beat St. John's 154-98 and Seton Hall posted a 169-123 win over the Red Storm.

In men's action, sophomore Greg Danner (Pittsford, N.Y.) set a pair of BIG EAST records, winning the 200-yard fly in 1:51.94 and the 400-yard individual medley in 4:06.66. Freshman Michal Szapiel (Poznan, Poland) posted two individual wins and was a member of the winning 200-yard free relay. Szapiel set a BIG EAST record as he won the 200-yard free in 1:43.19, and later captured the 500-yard free, winning in 4:41.08. Other winners for the Red Storm were sophomore Daniel Wells (Ontario, Canada) in the 1650-yard free (15:57.76), junior Danilo Perunovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia), who set a BIG EAST record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.11, junior Jaak Savvi (Tallinn, Estonia), who set a conference mark with a time of 49.60 in the 100-yard butterfly and Milos Cerovic, who won the 100-yard back in a conference record setting pace of 52.35.

On the women's side, freshman Laura Nuudi (Tallinn, Estonia) won the 100-yard back in a time of 1:00.46, setting a BIG EAST record, and also set a conference mark when she won the 200-yard back in a time of 2;08.90.

The Red Storm competes next on January 27 at Stony Brook.
