Duke Sweeps College of Charleston

Charleston, S.C. - The Duke University men's and women's swimming teams surged to easy dual meet victories over the College of Charleston Cougars on Saturday in Charleston, S.C. The Blue Devil women defeated the Cougars 172-69 while the Duke men were victorious with a 160-71 victory.

The Duke women took 11 of 13 events as the Blue Devils improved to 5-1. The five victories mark the most victories since 1998-99 when the Blue Devils finished 5-5. Freshmen Lauren Cornet (Great Falls, Va.) and Lauren Hancock (Pendleton, S.C.) paced the Blue Devils to victory. Cornet won the 200-freestyle (2:12.06) and the 200-breaststroke (2:42.90) while Hancock posted victories in the 400-freestyle (4:36.97) and the 800-freestyle (9:24.60). Cornet also swam the second leg on the winning 400-medley relay team (4:32.78) while Hancock swam the second leg on the winning 400-freestyle relay team (4:09.99).

In the men's meet, Duke captured nine of 13 events as they improved to 4-2. The four victories mark the most victories since 1994-95 when the Blue Devils post a 6-5 record. Freshman Travis French (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led the Blue Devils as he was victorious in the 400-freestyle (4:16.40) and the 800-freestyle (8:57.39).

Duke returns to action on Sat. Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. when the Blue Devils travel Charlottesville, Va. to take on ACC foe Virginia.
