Boston College Defeats Rhode Island

CHESTNUT HILL Mass.- Boston College swimming and diving teams defeated Rhode Island today in at home meet in the Flynn Complex Pool on the Chestnut Hill campus. The women's team collected 180 points to URI's 120 and the men finished with 177 points to URI's 112.

To begin the meet, the 200-medley relay of Brianne Sullivan, Michelle Lane, Lauren Schwartz and Alexis Kostopoulos won with a time of 4:06.

In the first individual event, Caitlin Healy won the 1000 freestyle. In the 100 backstroke Nina Suryoutomo won with a time of 1:01.21. In the 200 freestyle Lauren Ohtake took the victory with a time of 1:58.38. Lauren Keibler finished first in the 100 breaststroke. Following in the 200 butterfly Christa Ehlers took the first of her two wins. The second would come later in the 500 freestyle.

In the 50 freestyle Caitlin Cox won with a time of 25.14 seconds. In the 100 freestyle Alexis Kostopoulos took first and in the 200 breaststroke Lane swam to victory. Caitlin Klick took the win in the 100 butterfly followed by Schwartz's win in the 200 individual medley. The Eagles took their last victory of the day when they won the 200 freestyle relay.

Winning the one-meter diving recent, Katelyn Cox scored 166.80 points.

In women's event the Eagles won 12 of 13 first places. The Rams lone victory came in the 200 backstroke when Kathryn Hawley swam a 2:16.32.

Wining the first event for the men, Marc Manganiello swam a 1:02.81 in the 100 breaststroke. Manganiello's second victory would later come when he won the 200 breaststroke. The Eagles continued to swim to victory as the Eagles took first place in the next two events. Nick Riolo won the 200 butterfly and Matt Baker won the 50 freestyle. In the 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley backstroke, Andy Naumann swam a 2:03 and a 2:02 respectively.

Taking the first event of the day for the men, Rhode Island won the 400 medley relay. Taking individual victories for the Rams Matt Emmert won both the 1000 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Winning the 200 freestyle Matt Benedict swam a 1:49.23. Michael Capozzi won the 100 backstroke. Also for the Ram's, Mathan Suida won the 50 freestyle event. Benedict won his second race of the night in the 100 butterfly. The final Rhode Island victory came when they won the 200 freestyle relay.

The Boston College women's swimming and diving team improves to 7-2 and the men's team improves to 7-3.

The next competition for the women's swimming diving team will take place on Tue, Jan. 23 at 7:00 p.m. at the Flynn Complex Pool , in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Against Boston University. On Wed. Jan. 24 the men's team will travel across town to take on Boston University at 7:00 p.m.
