Wyoming Women Earn Two Conference Dual Wins

Jan 24, 2001

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team improved its season record to 7-1, 3-1 in conference Saturday, after defeating Air Force and New Mexico in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Cowgirls just edged the Falcons 57-56, and outlasted the Lobos 64-49 for the victories.

Three Cowgirl swimmers picked up wins to help lead Wyoming. Freshman Lauren Bush won the 200 free in a time of 1:57.94, sophomore Angie Sax took the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:09.03 and sophomore Allison Schmid placed first in the 200 breaststroke. Schmid also placed third in the 200 free and fourth in the 500 free.

Wyoming's women also swept both relay events, winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:59.95 and the 400 free relay with a season best time of 3:36.55.

Senior diver Wendy O'Connell took third on the one-meter springboard and sophomore Lauren Colaric placed third on the three-meter.

The Wyoming men weren't as strong as the women, falling to Air Force 133-108. The loss drops the Pokes' season record in duals to 4-3, 1-2 in the MWC.

Sophomore sensation Damian Storz was once again the story for the Cowboys winning three events against the Falcons. Storz took first in the 1000 free (10:02.57), the 200 IM (1:57.44) and the 500 free (4:45.08).

Junior diver Oscar Delgado swept the diving events, winning the one-meter with a score of 284.60 and the three-meter with a mark of 298.70.

Sophomore Jake Weidert was the only other Cowboy to win an individual event, taking the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:53.98. UW's 400 free relay team also placed first. Junior Guy Fulfer had a solid outing against Air Force as well, placing second in the 100 free and third in the 200 free.

"We were very fortunate to pick up both victories on the women's side today," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "We had to leave two of our top swimmers at home because they were ill so that left us shorthanded, but the rest of the team stepped it up and we were able to get by both Air Force and New Mexico today in a meet that shouldn't have been as close as it ended up.

"The men were shorthanded as well today, but that's still no excuse for why we didn't swim better today. Damian (Storz) was Damian today and he is just solid for us every week. We still need to learn how to get more focused for meets like this. The Air Force men were really up for this one since we beat them last year in Laramie." Johnson said.

The Cowgirls will hit the pool Friday, Jan. 24, in Fort Collins when they compete against rival Colorado State. Last season in Laramie, the women defeated the Rams in a dual meet for the first time in school history. The women will then come home Jan. 25 and join the men's team for a dual meet against the Colorado School of Mines. The home meet will begin at 1:00 pm at Corbett Pool.
