North Carolina Too Much For Maryland Swimmers

Jan 30, 2001

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior diver Ashleye Henyan (Corning, N.Y.) swept both the one-meter and three-meter diving events but it was not enough as the No. 16 Maryland women's swimming and diving team lost to No. 8 North Carolina, 203-96. The men's team also lost to the nationally-ranked Tar Heels, 205-95.

For the Terrapin women, Henyan was the only multiple winner on the day with winning scores of 261.82 and 273.45 on the one-meter and three-meter boards, respectively. It was the first meet this season than Henyan captured first in both diving events.

Other winners for Maryland included senior Katy Novotny (Bel Air, Md.) in the 50 free (23.52) and sophomore Bridget Mallon (Arlington, Va.) in the 100 fly (56.00).

For the men, senior Drew Childs (Wallingford, Pa.) turned in a strong performance by winning the 100 free (46.41) and finishing second in the 50 free (21.07).

Junior Michael Malchak (Columbia, Md.) also had a first-place finish for the Terps in the 500 free (4:32.70). Two other Maryland swimmers, juniors Ryan Walker (Havertown, Pa.) in the 200 back (1:51.17) and Thomas Ehrhardt (Aschaffenburg, Germany) in the 100 fly (50.31) won events for the Terrapins.

The losses for both teams are the first in ACC action this season. The men fall to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference while the women drop to 8-2 and 1-1 in the ACC. North Carolina's men's team, ranked No. 14 in the country, improves to 5-2 on the year and 3-1 in the ACC while the women are now 7-1 this season and 4-0 in the conference.
