Maryland Sweeps Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke University men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded their 2000-01 ACC season as the Maryland Terrapins swept the Blue Devils on Sunday afternoon at Taishoff Aquatic Center. The 16th-ranked Maryland women defeated Duke 146-89, while the Terrapin men registered a 173-62 victory over the Blue Devils.

In the women's meet, freshman Amanda Davis (Tucson, Ariz.) swept both the one-meter and three-meter diving events with winning scores of 220.125 and 215.775. That marked the first meet this season that Davis has captured first place in both diving events. Senior diver Kristy Guenther (Elm Grove, Wis.) also turned in a solid performance as she finished second in both diving events with scores of 204.825 and 209.925. Freshman Lauren Cornet (Great Falls, Va.) was the only Blue Devil swimmer who claimed top honors as she won the 100-breaststroke with a time of 1:04.71.

For the men, three Blue Devil swimmers claimed first-place honors. Freshman Travis French (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) took first in the 200-freestyle (1:45.10), freshman Conor O'Brien (Glencoe, Ill.) took first in the 100-freestyle (47.76), and sophomore Ryan Spoon (Potomac, Md.) swam the top time in the 100-breaststroke (58.47).

The Duke women drop to 5-3 overall and 0-3 in the ACC while the Blue Devil men are now 4-4 overall and 0-3 in the ACC. The Maryland women improve to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC and then Terrapin men improve to 8-2, 2-1 in the ACC.

Duke returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1:00 p.m. when the Blue Devils conclude the 2000-01 regular season with a home meet against Davidson College.
