Loyola Splits Dual Conference Meet with Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (Jan. 31) - Loyola women's swimming team closed out its dual meet season with a 138-94 win over conference opponent Iona Wednesday afternoon in New Rochelle, NY. The Loyola's men team, however, just fell short of a win as the Gaels defeated the Greyhounds 120-116.

The Loyola women captured eight events as Sarah O'Donnell, Meghan Devine and Amy Sweigert swept the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Julie Nowak won the 1000 freestyle in 11:18.59. The 400 medley relay team of Nowak, Vicky Lindsay, Kathy Breuninger and Laura Pensabene took first place with a time of 4:14.33. Pensabene and Erin O'Brien placed first and second in the 100 freestyle with times of 56.38 and 58.15, respectively.

Iona's Kristie Kelly took first place in the 200 and 500 freestyle in 2:01.17 and 5:22.15, respectively. The 400 freestyle relay team, powered by Katirina Fielding, Meredith Morse, Kara Shomberger and Kim Trebon, took first place with a time of 4:01.37.

The Loyola men fell just four points of a win. Jamie Barone won the 200 backstroke and the 200 breaststroke in 2:00.6 and 2:16.81, respectively. Brian Kusterer and Michael Hoffman took first and second place in the 100 and 200 freestyle, respectively. Kusterer swam the 100 in 49.49 and the 200 in 1:50.24. Hoffman finished the 100 with a time of 49.65 and the 200 in 1:50.56.

Iona's 400 medley relay of Ryan Pellow, Todd Brady, Dominik Przekota and Chris Driwinga took first place with a time of 3:46.95. Driwinga also won the 200 butterfly in 2:04.92 and the 500 freestyle in 5:05.28.

Loyola returns to action Feb. 15-17 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championships in the Fitness and Aquatic Center at Loyola.
