Duke Secures Winning Season by Sweeping Davidson

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke University swimming and diving teams concluded their 2000-01 dual meet seasons on Saturday afternoon by sweeping Davidson College at Taishoff Aquatic Center. The Blue Devil women defeated the Wildcats 147-82, while the Duke men defeated the Wildcats 137-75.

With the win, the Duke women secured their first winning season since 1993-94, as they improved to 6-3. The Blue Devil men improved to 5-4 as they secured their first winning season since 1994-95. This also marks the first time in head coach Bob Thompson's 23 seasons that both teams posted a winning record.

The Blue Devil women swept all 13 events as freshman Lauren Hancock (Pendleton, S.C.) led Duke with two individual victories in the 1,000-freestyle (10:27.02) and the 200-butterfly (2:09.15). She also swam the first leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:41.53). Junior Jen Gauger (Greensboro, N.C.) picked up her first collegiate victory as she claimed the 200-freestyle (1:57.79), and also swam the final leg on the 400 freestyle relay team. Sophomore Kristina Koehler (Hong Kong) also turned in a solid performance as she swam a season's best 2:10.66 in the 200-backstroke.

The Duke men captured 11 of 13 events en route to their fifth victory of the season. Freshman Conor O'Brien (Glencoe, Ill.) posted top times in the 50-freestyle (21.58) and the 100-freestyle (47.00), and also swam the final leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:09.41). Freshman diver Doug Warner (Granby, Conn.) had his best meet of the season as he captured first place in both diving events. He posted his top score of the year of 230.18 on the three-meter board and won the one-meter event with a score of 199.95. Freshman Travis French (Yorktown Height, N.Y.) was also a dual winner as he captured the 500-freestyle (4:41.09) and 1,000-freestyle (9:45.59) events.

The Duke women return to action on Feb. 15-17 when the Blue Devils travel to Charlottesville, Va. for the ACC Championships while the Duke men will travel to ACC's on Feb. 22-24.
