Magyar Dreams: Hungary will never forget the three silver medals won by Laszlo Cseh in the wake of Michael "The Alien" Phelps at Beijing 2008 and will doubtless wish to strike back one day. Time is short, Phelps likely to make London 2012 his swansong, with the most likely event on his schedule his signature 200m butterfly. Hungary is building a boy who may cause the great one a headache: at Youth Olympics in Singapore Bence Biczo, 17 this year, clocked 1:55.89 to win the 200m butterfly. He has no coach with him, flew in for the race and will fly out soon after it, and still managed a performance that rivalled the best of 1:55.82 he established when lifting the European Junior title last month. That time is third-best Hungarian effort - but best ever seen in textile.
At 15, Phelps raced in the Olympic to 5th place in 1:56.50. Astonishing. By 17, he was well-established as world champion, national champion and world record holder, on a sub-1:55 in textile jammers.
Back to the future, and on the domestic front, Biczo has Cseh and Gergo Kis to worry about on his way to the future. The journey to Shanghai 2011 will let us much about where the London 2012 battle is heading.
France: The victorious squad of Gaul, taking a break after conquering Europe in Budapest last week, will reassemble for orientation, bonding and the start of their Shanghai 2011 campaign at a camp in Corsica from September 9.
