David Meca Protests Suspension

Sep 29, 1999

Spainish long distance swimmer David Meca who was suspended by FINA in May for a positive test for nandrolone, an anabolic androgenic steroid which took place in January at the FINA Long Distance World Cup event in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, chose a unique way to protest his suspension.

With his feet in chains he jumped in the water in San Francisco Bay and swam all the way to the infamous former penitentiary of Alcatraz.

We can't say whether this had any effect on his FINA suspension but it did manage to get him some media attention no doubt.
Quite a way to protest!
