China: Liu Jing, a member of China's bronze-medal winning 4x200m freestyle quartet at the world championships in Shanghai in July, was issued an anti-doping warning by her federation after a positive test that dated back to April.
FINA records the violation as follows: "On April 3, 2011, a swimmer Jing LIU (CHN) was tested positive to the substance Prednisone (Class S9 Glucocorticosteroids) following a doping control test conducted with the occasion of the National Swimming Championships. The China Swimming Association imposed a sanction of warning on the athlete."
Liu clocked 1:58.35 in the 200m freestyle at Chinese nationals back in April. At the world championships in Shanghai, she clocked 1:57.85 in the 4x200m freestyle relay to help China take the bronze medal. Her split time was significantly faster than the solo time of China's second best in the individual 200m freestyle, while all others in the quartet swam times at least 2sec faster than the swimmer selected for the solo event.
Cesar Cielo, world champion sprinter from Brazil, was allowed to compete in July after CAS upheld a warning imposed on the swimmer by Brazil after he tested positive for a banned diuretic at a competition in May. FINA had challenged the warning and had urged CAS to impose a three-month ban, which would have ended Cielo's world-title defence.
