Quality Shoal Heads For Mare Nostrum

Apr 19, 2010  - Craig Lord

Entries are still pouring in for the 2010 Mare Nostrum Tour but the three-meet event at Monaco, Barcelona and Canet in the second week in June already boasts a world-class line-up that has attracted 10 national broadcasters so far.

 The tour kicks off on June 5-6 in Monte Carlo with the promise of a sprint clash between Eamon Sullivan, Alain Bernard and Brent Hayden, and the possible first meeting of world champion and record holder in the 200m free, Paul Biedermann, and the fastest 17-year-old in the world, Yannick Agnel, on a French record of 1:46.35 last weekend.

   Agnel is a member of Olympic Nice, which will send a team that includes Camille Muffat and Clément Lefert. Other French clubs to have entered world-class swimmers include Antibes, Bernard to be joined by Boris Steimitz and Christophe Lebon, with Mylene Lazare and Coralie Balmy, from Sarcelles and Toulouse respectively, accompanying the contingent.

 National teams and national squad selections include Australia; Canada, including Annamay Pierce; China, with Zhang Lin; Croatia; the Faroe Islands; Germany; Hungary; India; Russia; and Scotland, as they warm-up for the only big international at which the St Andrews Cross is flown, the Commonwealth Games;

 Coach Dave Salo is represented by a contingent from Trojan, including Kosuke Kitajima, Rececca Soni, Jessica Hardy and Oussama Mellouli, the latter two both with their doping-related problems in recent years, while other big names include Sara Isakovic, of Slovenia and Berkeley University in the US; Therese Alashammar and Sarah Sjostrom, of Sweden; Natalie Coughlin and Dana Vollmer; Aaron Peirsol and Eric Shanteau.
