Alabama Swimming and Diving Hosts SEC Championships

Feb 21, 2001

For the first time since 1992, the Southeastern Conference will contest its swimming and diving championship at the Alabama Aquatic Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The meet starts Wednesday (Feb. 21) and runs through Saturday (Feb. 24).

And while it's been nine years since the SECs were on campus, that's not to say that the University of Alabama doesn't know a thing or two about hosting the championship. The Crimson Tide hosted the league showdown three times between 1987 and 1992.

Prelims for each day start at 10:30 a.m. while finals start at 6:30 each day.

Arguably the nation's top swimming and diving conference, the SEC boasts the two-time defending NCAA women's champion in Georgia while Auburn's men have won the NCAA title twice in the past four years.

Currently the Lady Dogs are ranked atop the Speedo America Coaches' Poll, with Auburn coming in fifth, Florida sixth, Tennessee 22nd, Kentucky 24th and Alabama receiving votes. On the men's side, the Tennessee men are ranked No. 2, Auburn is sixth, Florida 10th, Georgia 12th, Kentucky 23rd and Alabama receiving votes.

The Lady Dogs have won four straight conference championships. Before that, Florida won 15 of the first 16 SEC titles with Alabama breaking the Gator's string in 1985. In addition to finishing second at the NCAA Championships last season, Auburn's men won their fourth straight SEC title.
