Dekker Downs World Champ Sjostrom

Mar 26, 2010  - Craig Lord

A day after Sara Sjostrom pipped the Dutch over 200m free in the Sloterparkbad at the Amsterdam Swim Cup, Inge Dekker struck a blow for home pride with a 58.47 victory over the world champion, second in 59.10, in the 100m butterfly.

Dekker was determined to set the pace from go, turning in 27.36, to Sjostrom's 28.15, with Kim Vandenburg (USA) third through on 28.42. From there, the race was just about done, with the American taking third by a comfortable margin, in 59.80. Dekker's effort booked her a place in the race at European Championships in Budapest in August.

She was joined on her national team by Sebastiaan Verschuren, on 1:47.39 in the 200m freestyle, third best in the world so far this year. Early days, of course. Joost Reijns (NED) took second, in 1:48.92, with Stefan de Die third in 1:49.28.

In the 100m backstroke, Femke Heemskerk, second in the 200m free on day 1, set a pool record of 1:01.77 to fend off Wendy vd Zanden, on 1:02.30, with Jenny Mensing (GER) third on 1:02.65 and multi-eventer Sjostrom back in the swim on 1:02.73. In fifth, Sharon van Rouwendaal, of Eiffel Swimmers, set a 1:02.75 Dutch under 17s record.

Joeri Verlinden, of Eiffel Swimmers, booked his place in Budapest with a 53.18 upset win over Olympic and world finalist Jason Dunford (KEN), on 53.01, and his new ADN Project training partner, Evgeny Korotyshkin (RUS), on 53.73, with Steffen Deibler (GER) on 54.12. Dunford led at the half-way mark on 24.55, with Verlinden on 24.81. The 21-year-old Dutch winner has reason to be delighted with the time on the clock: his 2009 best was a 51.97 in Rome 2009. Not far to go.

There was no qualifier for Budapest in the women's 400m medley, though Lieke Verouden set a best time of 4:49.55, her first time below 4:50 and a pool record. The 800m free for men went to Luca Ferretti (ITA) 7:59.65, with another Eiffel swimmer topping the Dutch entry, Job Kienhuis (NED) second in 8:08.18.

No qualifier in the 100m breaststroke though the Dutch celebrated a win in a tight final: Moniek Nijhuis clocked 1:09.68 ahead of Chiara Boggiatto (ITA) 1:09.99 and Elise Matthysen (BEL) third in 1:10.12, locking out Sophie De Ronchi (FRA), on 1:10.21 and heading for her own domestic trials for Budapest soon.

Simon Sjodin (SWE) set a pool record of 2:01.32 to win the 200m medley ahead of a 2:03.56 from Federico Turrini (ITA), just 0.06sec ahead of the man in third, Bram Dekker, of Eiffel, 20 and rocketing up the Dutch rankings to 5th best ever.

In a youth timed 100m backstroke final at the end of the session, Silvia Dik set an under 15s Dutch record of 1:03.94 to book a place at the European junior championships in Helsinki this year. Also bound  for the Finnish capital are Kira Toussaint, on 1:04.71, and Annemarie Worst, on 1:04.76. Holland is paving the way for the next generation.
