World champ over 100m back in 2009, Britain's Gemma Spofforth (University of Florida) put a final triple touch to a superb NCAA career at the Purdue University pool, West Layayette, Indiana, on Saturday.
In winning the 100yd back (50.92), for the third consecutive year, she joined the ranks of Sue Walsh (UNC), Betsy Mitchell (Texas), Lea Loveless (Stanford) and Natalie Coughlin (California) in the club of triple winners.
Spofforth's talents extend beyond backstroke: she raced as a member of Florida's winning 4x50yd free quartet, her 21.46 the swiftest of any at the meet. Spofforth will wave an emotional farewell to her NCAA days after racing the 200y back today.
