In Nice, Alain Bernard, Olympic 100m free champion, showed that he was still feeling the effects of a three-week altitude training camp in Pretoria, South Africa. The French sprinter clocked 50.20, after a heats time of 50.98, in the 100m free.

Despite the work load, coach Denis Auguin expressed disappointment, telling L'Equipe: I expected him to swim faster ... especially because he looked good in warm-up and put in a convincing heat that was comparable to the time he did in Luxembourg (in January, Bernard clocked 49.58 in finals at Luxembourg."

Auguin added that "all the pieces of the puzzle are there". Bernard will try to put pieces in the right place at a meet in Paris on March 19-20.
