In approving the return of 3.2 million euros of state money to a national sports budget that had previously been cut, the Italian Senate, by 134 votes for, 99 against, with four abstentions, noted in a statement that the funds "are not (to be) used to plug the holes in the World Swimming Championships", according to Italian media reports.
Several millions of a 12 million debt from Rome 2009 are still to be accounted for in terms of who will ultimately pick up the tab. The Senate statement notes that there has been "no" decision on the world swimming championship debts as yet.
