Dubai Gets Deadline From FINA

Jan 15, 2010  - Craig Lord

Dubai has been given until the end of the month to pay a fee due to the international federation in its role as host to the world short-course championships next December.

If the money is not forthcoming by that deadline, Dubai will forfeit the meet and FINA will hold further negotiations with alternative bidders for swimming's winter showcase event, according to sources in Bangkok, where the FINA Bureau has been meeting for the past two days.

Preliminary enquiries have already been made with officials in Las Vegas and Indianapolis, in the USA, as news of financial difficulties in Dubai forced FINA to have a plan B ready should one prove necessary.

Dubai is due to host the 2013 world long-course championships, by which time the venue and surrounding infrastructure is more likely to be ready and up and running than it is right now.
