The 100m free on the first day of the Duel in the Pool is a USA Vs Italy affair in which Michael Phelps may be the only many to step up in 2010-compliant kit. We shall soon see. The race should be a thriller. Nathan Adrian, Michael Phelps and Garrett Weber-Gale take on Marco Orsi, Filippo Magnini and Christian Galenda.
The E-Stars could not find a third man to swim 400m medley. Nor a third woman for the 200m backstroke. Nor a third man for the 200m back. No replacement for Federica Pellgrini in the 400m free either. Those all important single points may count much ... no doubting who the underdog is - though the US will still need to fight for it in a number of events and clever choices will count
Every race contains a potential gem or two. The busiest man is Phelps, with three swims, in the medley relay, the 100m free and 100m 'fly, while Katie Hoff and Dagny Knutson both race the 400m medley at the start of the show and the 400m free at the end of the show on day one.
