Eastern Michigan Heads Into Second Day With Narrow Lead Over Miami

Mar 2, 2001

OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University's men's swimming and diving team kicked the 2001 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships off in strong fashion. As a team, the RedHawks gained 265 points, which is only 7.5 points behind Eastern Michigan (272.5). To go along with that, Miami crowned four conference champions on opening night.

Junior John Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis) won his third MAC title of his career on Thursday after winning the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:28.39. Carroll dethroned last year's champion in the 500 and teammate Kevin Mulgrew (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic), who finished third with a time of 4:31.93. Carroll is looking to defend MAC titles in both the 400 yard individual medley and the 200 yard butterfly.

Junior Eric DiSalle (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis) was the next Miami swimmer to win a championship. DiSalle took first-place in the 200 yard individual medley, finishing with a time of 1:49.67. DiSalle joined freshman Brad Bartel (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) and senior John Kirk (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) to complete the 1-2-3 sweep in the event.

Senior Will Sensenbrenner (Champaign, Ill/Central) turned in an incredible performance in the 50 yard freestyle. Sensenbrenner took first with a time of 19.97, which made him the only swimmer in this event to finish with a time below 20 seconds.

Even though it came down to the last dive, junior Dylan Nichols (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) defended his 2000 MAC title on the one-meter diving board. Nichols edged out Ball State diver Corey Ervin by a score of 292.20 to 292.00. Nichols looks to defend his three-meter championships tomorrow.

Competition resumes at noon tomorrow with preliminary action, which is followed by the finals starting at 7 p.m.
