Harvard Opens Up Big Lead After Day One Of Easterns

Mar 2, 2001

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Harvard University opened up defense of its Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming championship in impressive style as the Crimson captured four gold medals and lead second place Brown University 522-314 at Crandall Pool at West Point, N.Y. Thursday night. Army stands in last place with 83.5 points after day one of competition. Yale University stands in third place just one point behind Brown with 313 points after the first day of the three-day event. Princeton (307.5), Navy (272), Columbia (208), Penn (139), Cornell (103), Dartmouth (91) and host Army round out the 10-school field.

Harvard sophomore Dan Shevchik set a new Crandall Pool record in the 200-yard individual medley by finishing in 1 minute 48.23 seconds. He topped Yale's George Gleason (1:48.84) who had lowered the pool standard that morning in the preliminaries.

Army's 200 free relay team of Dan Downs, Michael Traugutt, Lucas Meyers and Michael Vahle was the only highlight of the afternoon for the host institution. They were the only Top 8 finish for the Black Knights placing sixth. Army's 400 medley relay team was the only other A final qualifier, however, they were disqualified in the finals for a false start.

Tomorrow's action kicks off at 11:00 a.m. with the preliminaries and finishes with the finals at 6:00 p.m.
