The fastest qualifiers were Americans Dana Vollmer, in 1:55.98, and Allison Schmitt, on 1:56.75, with Brit Joanne Jackson on 1:56.81. Federica Pellegrini (ITA), the world record holder and Olympic champion, went through in 1:57.22. Vollmer's 2008 best in 2008 was 1:58.58 and her pre-Rome 2009 best, from US trials finals, was 1:56.20.
