WR's: J01 In, X-Glide And Aquaforce Zero Out

Jun 22, 2009  - Craig Lord

In a further woeful consequence of poor leadership in swimming (the indecision of the top body and its message to suit makers in 2008 that 'anything goes' coupled with the lack of control by national federations produces a heady cocktail of incompetence and damage), FINA has released a list of world records that have been ratified - and those that will never be recognised. Effectively, times set in Jaked's red-hot poker are fine (though many are still pending ratification because of a lack of doping-control information - some dating back to March, oddly), those set in an arena X-Glide and the Descente Aquaforce Zero, despite those suits now having been approved, are not recognised. Evidence of the unlevel nature of swimming's playing field can be found at every turn of the page is one of the saddest chapters of swimming history. Canada has yet to apply for ratification of the 200m breaststroke s/c record of Annamay Pierse back in March, while Federica Pellegrini's 200m free would-be world record from March is not yet recognised because the pool verification form has not yet been received.

Meanwhile, the ripples of FINA's decision to make Rome 2009 a circus have started to be felt around the world. Here's one of the first reactions from The Australian.
