Jiao's Triple Ends With 26.04 Record 50m 'Fly Win

On the penultimate day of Chinese nationals in Shaoxing, East China, Olympic silver winner Jiao Liuyang completed a butterfly triple by adding the 50m crown to those she won over 100m and 200m. Jiao, from the Guangzhou Army team, clocked 26.04sec, 0.04sec inside her own national mark, set in the semis on Friday. 

That Friday session saw one Asian record and two national records fall, the regional standard going to Jiao in 57.16sec over 100m butterfly, 0.22 seconds faster than the previous mark held by Zhou Yafei.

Jiao, 18, told local reporters: "After the Beijing Olympic Games, I started to strengthen the sprint training and that's why I swam to my personal best over the 50m and 100m, while my 200m was yet to reach my peak form."  After winning the 50m, Jiao said that her sprint work was geared to improving her "favourite" event - 200m

In the 50m, Zhou Yafei, described by Xinhua agency as Jiao's teammate and a member of a different army - the Chinese Army - team, and Hong Wenwen, of Hubei, clocked 26.12 and 26.43 respectively.

Elsewhere, the men's 50m freestyle national record went to Cai Li of Zhejiang by 22.19 (the previous record of 22.24 was set on Friday by Shi Runqiang who came to third in 22.45); Zhao Jing, of Hubei, took the women's 200m backstroke in 2:07.87; Shi Feng of Shanghai took the 100m butterfly in 51.86; 15-year-old Li Xuanxu, of Hunan, claimed the 800m freestyle in 8:25.88.

On Friday, Xie Zhi, of Yunnan, shaved 0.59sec off his own 200m breaststroke China record with a 2:12.75 victory; Pang Jiaying, Olympic 200m bronze medallist, claimed the 100m free 54.28; Chinese Navy's veteran Qi Hui clocked 2:24.37 to win 200m breaststroke at the helm of a final that produced eight sub 2:27 swims; Diao Jigong won the men's 200m backstroke in 1:59.29.
