Stanford Men's Swimming Finishes Second At NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 2 Stanford men's swimming team finished the 2001 NCAA Championships as national runners-up with a team score of 457.5. Top-ranked Texas won the national championship with a score of 597.5 while Tennessee (330.5), USC (299) and Florida (299) finished in the top five.

Senior Adam Messner won his second straight national title in the 200 fly. His time of 1:43.12 was enough to edge Florida's Duncan Sherrard, who clocked a 1:43.18. In the prelims, the two swimmers were neck and neck as Sherrard clocked a 1:44.15 while Messner had a 1:44.20. Messner's winning mark is a career best time and places second on the all-time Stanford list to Pablo Morales (1:42.60).

Also in the 200 fly, senior Steven Brown finished fourth with a time of 1:44.19, a best mark of the year for him and sophomore Dan Westcott's time of 1:44.88 was 14th in the consolations.

In the 200 back, Stanford had all three of its competitors place in the top seven, led by freshman Markus Rogan in second place. He swam his best time of the year in the finals with a 1:41.64 after equaling his previous best time in the prelims (142.58). Freshman Peter Marshall was fourth in a time of 1:42.38, bettering his best mark of the year by more than one second. Sophomore Randal Ball took seventh place with his time of 1:43.51. He swam a season best time of 1:43.12 in the prelims.

Freshman Bobby O'Bryan won the consolation final, placing ninth in the 100 free. In the prelims, he recorded his best time of the year with a 43.57 and in the consolation finals, he swam a 43.60. Freshman Andrew Schnell placed 12th in the consolation finals with a time of 43.92. He also swam a faster time in the prelims for a season best mark of 43.68.

Freshman Michael Bruce clocked a 1:58.22 in the 200 breast consolation finals to place 11th. He swam a 1:56.89 in the prelims. Freshman Matt Sorlien clocked a 15:14.53 in the finals of the 1650 free to finish in 20th place. Stanford's 400 free relay team of Bobby O'Bryan, Andrew Schnell, Peter Marshall and Adam Messner swam a 2:54.12 to win the consolation final.

In the individual scoring, Peter Marshall and Adam Messner both finished with 47 points to tie for seventh. Markus Rogan was right behind them with 46.5 points while Steven Brown and Randal Ball each had 42 points to place 13th. Brown finishes his career in eighth place on the all-time top point scorers' list with 157. Messner finishes right behind him in ninth place with 156 points.
