Olympic medalists Chad Carvin (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Diana Munz (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) claimed their 15th and 14th national titles, respectively, on the opening day of the 2001 Phillips 66 National Championships.

Carvin of Mission Viejo posted a lifetime best 7:56.39 to win the men's 800m free. Germantown Academy up-and-comer Fran Crippen, 16, was second in 8:01.51. Munz of Lake Erie was equally as dominant in the women's 1500m free, winning in 16:27.74. Another young swimmer, Meredith Green of North Carolina, was runner-up in 16:35.48.

"That was the hardest, most deadliest swim of my life," Munz said. "At least I did okay. I took six weeks off after the Olympics. Then I got back in the water, but I wasn't really training that much. I didn't start seriously training until February. I just want to come here and make the World Championships team and then be able to go home and train hard for this summer. The week definitely gets easier from here
