USA: On a night when Matt Grevers, Mary DeScenza and Dagny Knutson set US s/c championship records at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, Ryan Lochte swam close to best time despite having only recently got back into training. Lochte clocked 1:40.89 seconds in the 200y medley. For those of us not used to seeing yards times, a better idea of where that figures in the life of JMr Lochte: it was just off his personal best of 1:40.08. Not bad for a man who took two months off after Beijing and is still only training an hour a day. "That felt good," he told AP. "I'm really surprised. I had no idea I would go near a best time."  Second in the medley with a best of 1:42.59 (previous: 1:43.91) was Eric Shanteau, post-cancer treatment and racing for the first time since surgery on August 26.

Lochte, meanwhile, is entered in six events during the three-day meet at the 1996 Olympic pool complex. On day one he also competed in the 50 freestyle, finishing seventh in a race won by Matt Grevers. Grevers, also back from a long post-Olympic break, got the sprint touch in 18.95, a championship record. Mary Descenza won the 500 freestyle in 4:35.63 and 16-year-old Dagny Knutson, a high school junior, claimed the 200 medley in 1:54.03.
