Suit Week: What Next In The Hi-Tech Debate?

Oct 19, 2008  - Craig Lord

Just when you thought the fast hi-tech swim suit debate had gone away, sunk by a tidal wave of world records and a Beijing Olympic Games that was perceived to have drawn a line of "fairness" on the issue, US coaches have stood up against the use of the latest generation of bodysuits in age-group and college swimming and some have indicated that the mood may stretch to the most elite of levels in the sport.

Next weekend, Australia's top coaches will meet specifically to debate the issue. There is already an understanding Down Under that age-group swimming is not a place for fast suits that clearly enhance performance. As in the US, some would like to go further, others not.

The week ahead is Suit Week here on SwimNews. We will talk through the issues, for and against, positive and negative ask where national federations and FINA, the international federation, stand, and consider the stance being taken by those who have either turned their face against the LZR Racer and suits of that ilk, or even taken legal action in the face of technology that has, without doubt, changed the nature of the sport of swimming.

SwimNews will also invite you to comment on the issue and a selection of replies will be published.

Some called the LZR Racer unethical, "doping on a hanger", others hail it as the best thing to happen in the pool for years. We start the debate tomorrow with a look back at how the technology came to be launched by one suit maker even though another suit maker had had its design using similar materials rejected less than a year before the Speedo suit made its competitive debut.
