British Championships & World Trials - Day 5

Apr 15, 2001  - Anita Lonsbrough

James Gibson twice broke the British and Commonwealth records for in the 50m breast-stroke on day five of the British Championships in Manchester the venue for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

The twenty-one year old Loughborough student set figures of 28.00 in the morning heats only to lower it by 1800ths in the semi-final. Both swims were inside the World Championship qualifying time but Gibson knows that he has to win the final to be sure of a place on the British team.

Georgina Lee booked her place for this summer's World Championships in Japan, when she won the 200m butterfly. The nineteen year old now based in the states lowered her own British record that she set in the semi-final at the Sydney Olympic Games, with a swim of 2min 10.21sec.

This was Lee's second record of the championships. In the 100m which was her first British record but not good enough for a world qualifying time but after fast heat and semi final swims it was clear she was on for another good swim in the final.

Jaonna Fargus like Lee in the butterfly, dominated the 200m backstroke from the start. Following her coach's instructions she went out hard and whilst the other closed down in the final stages she had enough in hand to win in 2min 11.81sec. a world championship qualifying time.

Coming home 0.63sec behind was Katy Sexton the Commonwealth champion with Sarah Price third a mere 100th behind.

Price twice lowered the British mark for the 50m distance. In the morning heats she lowered the old mark by 0.26sec. In the semi-final Price shaved another 0.21sec off to record 29.35.
