A fine piece on Matt Grevers today over at the Chicago Sun Times by columnist Rick Telander, and under the headline: 'He's not an unknown here: local swimmer has been making waves for a long time'.
Grevers does not have the form just yet but in the size stakes, he is to rivals what John Naber was to his opponents back in 1976: a giant. Grevers stood 6ft 6in in high school and is now 6ft 8in, with size 17 shoes and a 7ft wingspan. His mother, Anja, raced for the Netherlands, which boasts the tallest population in Europe.
Grevers tells the paper that he has high hopes in China. But can he get past teammate Aaron Peirsol. Grevers gives the same answer as Ryan Lochte does when asked about Michael Phelps: ''I do think it's possible. My strength is so much more now that I'm seriously lifting weights. [I] gained 15 to 20 pounds.'
He weighs in at 24olbs. Good lord, you're a monster! - says the columnist in Chicago. 'I'm kind of a monster, yeah,' replies Grevers, who concludes his interview by saying: ''I feel loved by Chicago. And I want to make Chicago proud.'
