WR: Lochte 100m Medley 51.15

Apr 13, 2008  - Craig Lord

Ryan Lochte walloped the world s/c record for six with a storming 51.15sec victory in the 100m medley just 29 minutes after taking silver in the 200m backstroke inside his previous world record pace at Manchester 2008. The world mark had stood to Lochte at 51.25 since yesterday, and at 51.52 to Ryk Neethling (RSA) before that.

It was Lochte's 20th race, with one to go. 'I'm doing the 'fly [in the medley relay] so we'll see what happens', said Lochte. How had he managed to maintain that? 'its just practice, practice. I just take one swim at a time.' He thanked the crow, which 'helped a lot'. Lochte now has four golds and three world records at this meet.

The silver went to Peter Mankoc (SLO) in a European record of 52.12, with previous holder (at 52.27 from the semis), Liam Tancock (GBR) on a British record of 52.22.

Tancock, thanking the first home crowd in front of which he ha ever competed at major international level, said: 'It's been a terrific championship and a great meet for me.'
