Miley: ER 4:33.24 400m Medley

Apr 5, 2008  - Craig Lord

Hannah Miley, of Scotland and Britain, has eclipsed Olympic champion Yana Klochkova's European record in the 400m Medley at the British trials with a storming 4:33.24 effort in heats.

Her splits: 1:03.58; 2:12.23; 3:29.64; 4:33.24

The time compares to a previous best of 4:39.77 and rockets the 18-year-old from Garioch in Aberdeenshire from 40th all-time best to third fastest in history. Here's the new top 10, which is close to knocking Petra Schneider (GDR) out after a 26-year presence:

1 4:31.46 Rice AUS 2008
2 4:32.89 Hoff USA 2007
3 4:33.24 Miley GBR 2008
4 4:33.59 Klochkova UKR 2000
5 4:34.25 Coventry ZIM 2007
6 4:34.79 Chen, Yan CHN 1997
7 4:34.95 Sandeno USA 2004
8 4:35.80 Filippi ITA 2006
9 4:35.96 Tajima JPN 2000
10 4:36.10 Schneider GDR 1982

Miley, coached by her father, Patrick Miley, a helicopter pilot and inventor of the Aquapacer training device, watched Keri-Anne Payne, of Stockport Metro, take down her national record with a 4:38.48 effort in the heat before her. Miley bent down to graciously shake hands with her Olympic teammate (they qualified one-two in the 200m medley) and then set about demolishing the standard.
