Swimming Hall of Fame Loses Bid

May 5, 2001

Despite great enthusiastic support from local hotel owners, the mayor and the local swimwimming community that filled the meeting hall, the Ft. Lauderdale city commission has knocked the International Swimming Hall of Fame out of contention for a proposed project which would have seen a new and improved Swimming Hall of Fame built on a location just down the street from the current facility.

Under the proposed plan the current Hall of Fame pool and museum would have been turned over to the city for the development of condominiums. The proposed site which is just down the street from the current Hall of Fame is a 5 1/2 acre strip of waterfront land that is currently used by the city as a parking lot.

Although their bid was unsuccessful the city commissioners agreed to consider building a new facility for the Hall of Fame somewhere else.
