Salim Iles (ALG) who lives and trains in France, bettered the African Record for the 100 freestyle on May 4 with 49.65, while competing in the French Open Nationals at Chamalieres, Apr 30 - May 6.

Iles also held the previous record of 49.70 from the Olympics in Sydney, Sep 19, 2000. Yesterday he finished second behind Pieter van den Hoogenband (NED) who won the race in 49.56.
