CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia head men's and women's swimming coach Mark Bernardino has announced that 15 swimmers have committed to attend the University of Virginia. Eight men's swimmers and seven women's swimmers have committed to the Cavaliers and will enroll at Virginia for the 2001-02 academic year.

The Virginia men's swimming recruits are: Chad Barlow (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy); Chris Cooper (Sparta, N.J./Sparta); Scott DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South); John Farmer (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal); Christopher "Bo" Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland); Brian Harrington (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon); Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson); and Jon Wilson (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman).

The seven women's recruits are: Coco Buck (Herndon, Va./Herndon); Carrie Ellis (Valrico, Fla./Durant); Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep); Laura Lipskis (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles); Katie McWilliams (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell); Heather Wilcox (Beaverton, Ore./South Ridge); and Kate Wrenshall (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School).

Chad Barlow, 6-4, 200, has only been swimming competitively for two years, but will have an immediate impact on the Cavalier swimming program. He is a Virginia Prep School State Champion. Barlow swims for Typhoon Aquatic Club. His top times are: 100y back (49.3); 200y back (1:46.5); 50y free (21.0); 100y free (46.2); and 200y free (1:39.6). Chris Cooper swims for Lakeland Hills YMCA and is a YMCA National Finalist. His top times are: 100y fly (50.60) and 200y fly (1:51.34). Scott DeMarco is a transfer from Nassau Community College. Scott, 6-2, 180, joins his brother Dan, who is an All-American distance swimmer for the Cavaliers. Scott swims for the Long Island Aquatic Club. His top times are: 200y IM (1:53.72); 400y IM (3:58.75); 100y breast (57.70); 200y breast (2:07.64); and 200y fly (1:49.10). John Farmer swims for NOVA of Richmond. His father, Don, graduated from Virginia in 1971 and was captain of the swim team. His top times are: 100y fly (52.43) and 200y fly (1:51.30).

Bo Greenwood is one of the premier recruits in the country. He was the captain of the 1999-2000 National Junior team. He was a 2000 Olympic Trials qualifier and was named the 2000 Richmond Times Dispatch Swimmer of the Year. Greenwood is a member of the National Honor Society at Goochland High School and salutatorian of the class of 2001. He swims for NOVA of Richmond and is team captain. Greenwood is a Senior National scorer and his personal best times are: 200y IM (1:49.31); 400y IM (3:50.04); 200y free (1:39.95); 500y free (4:29.41); 200y back (1:46.86); 200y fly (1:48.40); and 200y breast (2:03.46). His older brother, Jamie, was a member of Virginia's swim team this past season. Brian Harrington, 6-3, 175, is a member of the Ft. Belvoir Swim team. He is an Honors student at Mount Vernon High School. Harrington's top time are: 50y free (21.7) and 100y free (47.3). Michael Raab swims the butterfly and freestyle events and is captain of the Walter Johnson swim team. He is a member of the 2000-01 National Junior team and is the Junior National record holder in the 200 butterfly. Raab received honorable mention honors for the Maryland Distinguished Scholar program. His parents are both UVa graduates. His personal best times are: 100y fly (49.18); 200y fly (1:47.18); 200y free (1:41.42); 500y free (4:31.42); 1000y free (9:27.45); 200y IM (1:53.55); and 400y IM (3:55.58). Jon Wilson is a Principal's Scholar and National Merit-Qualifier at Douglas Freeman High School. He was a first-team Richmond All-Metro selection in the 100 fly. Wilson swims for NOVA of Richmond and his top times are: 100y fly (52.43) and 200y fly (1:51.30).

Coco Buck is a member of the York Swim team and is a Senior National qualifier. Buck's top times are: 100y breast (1:03.56) and 200y breast (2:18.19). Carrie Ellis is one of three women's recruits from Florida. She was a 2000 Olympic Trials qualifier. Ellis, who swims for the Blue Wave Swim team, is a Scholastic All-American and a member of the National Honor Society. Her best times include: 50y free (23.48); 100y free (50.36); and 200y free (1:51.37). Andrea Georoff, who is also from Florida, swims the 50 and 100 freestyles and the 100 butterfly. She was a 2000 Olympic Trials qualifier and swims for the Trinity Aquatics. Her personal best times are: 50y free (23.29); 100y free (50.68); 100y fly (55.75); and 100y back (58.19).

Laura Lipskis is ranked in the top two percent of her class at St. Charles High School. She is High School State Champion as well as a Senior National qualifier. Lipskis' best times are: 100y free (52.31); 200y free (1:49.72); 500y free (4:58.75); 1000y free (10:14.13); and 1650y free (16:57.47). Katie McWilliams is a National Honor Society member as well as a USA Swimming Scholar-Athlete. She is a Senior National scorer and swims for the Aqua Jets Swim Club. McWilliams' top time are: 500y free (4:54.69); 1000y free (10:00.25); and 1650y free (16:43.65). Heather Wilcox is ranked in the top five percent of her class at South Ridge High School. She swims for Thunderbolt Swim Club under Olympic coach Paul Bergen. Her top times are: 500y free (4:58.67); 1000y free (10:06.80); 1650y free (17:04.88); and 400y IM (4:30.16). Kate Wrenshall is UVa's third recruit from Florida and will add depth in the butterfly and IM events. Wrenshall is a Scholastic All-American and earned Second Honors throughout high school. She was an Olympic Trials qualifier and a Senior National scorer. Wrenshall's top times include: 100y fly (57.27); 200y fly (2:02.92); 200y IM (2:08.25); 400y IM (4:29.32); 500y free (5:01.17); and 1000y free (10:15.71).

The Virginia men's swimming and diving team finished the 2000-01 season with an 8-1 overall record and a 5-0 mark in the ACC. The Cavaliers won the ACC Championship for the third consecutive year with a meet record 883.5 points. UVa went on to finish 13th at the 2001 NCAA Championship. The Virginia women posted a 7-1 overall record and a 4-1 mark in the ACC. Virginia earned runners-up honors at the 2001 ACC Championship and went on to place 12th at the NCAA Championship.
