British Super Grand Prix - Day 3

Jun 4, 2001  - Anita Lonsbrough

Karen Pickering and Graeme Smith the British record breakers on day one and two, completed freestyle doubles on the final day of competition of the British Super Grand Prix held at the Manchester Aquatic Centre.

Pickering the twenty-nine year old former Commonwealth champion raced to victory in the 100m freestyle in 56.11sec gaining revenge over Rosalind Brett who beat her at last month's British Championships which doubled up as the World Championship Trials.

Afterwards Pickering explained "We all have to be on our best every time we race. We're all pushing each other all the time".

As in the 1500 the previous day Smith had no challengers. He was some what disappointed with his final time of 3:52.74, 1.2sec outside his personal best and explained afterwards "I would have liked to have gone a little faster but I think I still had a bit of last night in me".

Smith was the only swimmer to record an individual World Championship qualifying time but a another couple may be added when the full team is announced after the final event where qualifying times may be achieved in just three weeks time.

Joanna Fargus also completed a brace of victories. Hers came in the 100m backstroke where she failed by just 400th to equal her best. The nineteen year old 200m specialist claimed "when I came her I wasn't expecting much. I'm in full training at the moment so my times have been really good".

Bill Sweetenham, the Director of Performance who introduced two new concepts to the event- just four British swimmers in a final and the skins events said afterwards "the women have swum well here. The men have swum tired but I think everybody responded to the challenge. Whilst we've got a long way to go it seems everybody's lifted their game, including the coaches".
