Fast 50 Fly for Inge on Final Day of Dutch Nationals

Jun 5, 2001  - Oene Rusticus

The final day of the Dutch Championships at Eindhoven was the last opportunity to swim a time cut for both World Championships and European Youth Championships. Inge de Bruijn swam very good times at her favorite butterfly and freestyle, Klaas Erik Zwering swam a decent 200 back and young Lenneke van Schaik (1986) won surprisingly the 200 back for female.

The butterfly sprint should be the great moment of Ewout Holst (prelims 24.57), he wanted to get a ticket for Fukuoka. He was too hazardous, he started to fast and got disqualified. Number 2 at the wall, Joris Keizer was lucky, his silver medal turned into a golden one (24.61). Nick van der Zandt became youth champion with his prelim time 25.73.

Inge de Bruijn swam to a fantastic 26.51, the fastest time at the world rankings this year. Less than a second above her own world record. Very promising for Fukuoka! Chantal Groot and Hinkelien Schreuder finished second in the same time, 27.51. Inge Dekker, number 1 at the youth, swam a EYC time cut already at the prelims (28.13).

The longest event in a normal pool, the 1500 freestyle, is not an event for Dutch swimmers. John Keetman, still a youth swimmer, won this event in 16:23.56. Georgios Dimitras, Dutch champion at this event in short course, swam unofficial to 16:17.68 in the prelims. 400 IM for women is also an event on which Dutch swimmers aren't conquering the world. Ilse Kevelham won this event for females in 5:01.80, still a few seconds above her personal best time from the EYC at Moscow (1999).

Many people regard the 100 freestyle as the most prestigious event, in which the Netherlands is quite good with Hoogie and Inky. The best swimmers at this event will compete at Fukuoka at the freestyle relay.

Pieter van den Hoogenband won this event an a disappointing 49.83, followed by Johan Kenkhuis (50.12), Mark Veens (50.54) and Ewout Holst (50.81) who will swim at the relay. Inge de Bruijn swam a very good 55.33 at the prelims already, she won't compete at the final. Manon van Rooijen grabbed this opportunity and won the event in 56.68. The others followed her closely but had to let her go at the last 25 meters. Second finished Chantal Groot (56.83), followed by Wilma van Rijn (57.07) who swam the time cut already at an earlier meet, and Annabel Kosten 57.09.

Sander Ganzevles tried to swim the 200 backstroke time cut, but failed. His 2:02.71 was good for the second place behind Klaas Erik Zwering (2:01.88), who will swim this event at Fukuoka. Young Lenneke van Schaik won this event for female, her 2:20.82 was also good enough for a time cut for the EYC at Malta.

Last individual event at these 73rd Dutch Championships was the 50 breaststroke. Best result was for Guido Jansen who won gold in 29.43. Thijs van Valkengoed started to slow so he couldn't make his prelim time (30.14), but it was still good enough for gold for the youth. Nienke Valen swam the title for female at this event (32.71), same al last year. Madelon Baans followed her closely with 32.79. Both stayed half a second above the time cut for Fukuoka.
