Jun 28, 2001

Myden To Receive $35,000 In Additional Support for Next Two Years

Press Release
Swimming Canada's 2000 Olympic finalists received a substantial financial boost this week with the initiation of the national association's new "Team Elite" program which provides cash to top performers at the Olympic Games and long course world championships.

Designed to provide additional incentive and financial support to Canadian swimming's highest performing athletes, a $90,000 purse has been budgeted to reward swimmers who were finalists at the Sydney Olympics. Funds are distributed on a pro-rated basis, depending on how many swimmers meet the top eight minimum standard. Medal winners receive the greatest portion of the funds, while swimmers who finish in the top four receive a secondary level of funding. Top eight performers at the Olympics receive an entry level amount of funding. Swimmers' single best individual event performances are considered for the program.

As a result, the following national team swimmers have been named to SNC's TEAM ELITE for the 2001-2002 season based on performances at the Sydney Olympics:

  • Curtis Myden, 27, of Calgary, bronze medallist in the 400m IM, will receive $35,000 per year for the next two years;
  • Marianne Limpert, 28, of Fredericton, fourth in the 200m individual medley, will receive $15,000 this year and another $15,000 next year if she retains a top six result at the world aquatic championships this summer or a top 6 result in the world rankings at the end of this year's long course season;
