Sludnov World Record Perspective

Jul 2, 2001

Roman Sludnov's World Record swim in the 100 Breaststroke this past weekend in Moscow, marks the first time anyone has recorded a time under 1 minute in that event.

To put the swim into perspective we compiled a list of the top 15 performances all-time. Sludnov has 5 of the top 15 all-time best performances in the event.

It is interesting to note that in previous World Record efforts by both Fred de Burghgraeve, BEL and Ed Moses, USA, both had slightly faster split times than Sludnov did in this record. In his World Record swim of 1:00.60 set in 1996 Fred de Burghgraeve split the race in 28.23, while Ed Moses in his swim of 1:00.29 in March of this year split the race in 28.47.

In both World Record times that he achieved this past weekend Sludnov's splits were slower than those of both de Burghgraeve and Moses when they set their records. In the semi final race where Sludnov set the first record of 1:00.26 he split his race in 28.68 and then in the final of the event when he did his time of 59.97, he split the race in 28.54 and then brought it home in 31.43.
