British SC Champs - Day 1 Report

Aug 11, 2001  - Anita Lonsbrough

Georgina Lee and Sarah Price showed no signs of jetlag as they stormed to British records in their respective events on day one of the British Short Course Championships less than twenty-four hours after returning from Australia.

Lee the nineteen year old lost her British record for the 200m butterfly to Nicolas Jackson in Perth just days ago. Yesterday she was determined to recapture that mark.

For three quarters of the race the first three Lee, Jackson and Margaretha Pedder a former record holder, were all inside the record schedule. But it was Lee the Olympic and World semi-finalist who had the stronger finish pulling away to win by seven tenths from Jackson two years her junior.

Lee's time of 2min 08;04sec was 0;27sec inside Jackson British mark. Afterwards she admitted that " now I want to turn that time into a long course swim"" To do that she will have to wait until next year.

Price who set a World record for the 200m backstroke in Australia, lowered the her 100m British mark by 0;19sec when she won her semi-final in 59.68.

The twenty-two year old admitted she is "on a high" has promised that "I am aiming for the Commonwealth record in the final so keep your fingers crossed".

Her target is 59.33 held by Canadian Marylyn Chiang who established them when finishing in silver medal position at last year's World Short Course Championships in Athens holds these figures.
