Sludnov Denied World Record Twice

Aug 12, 2001

Reuters News Agency is reporting that Russian breaststroker Roman Sludnov bettered the world record in the men's 50m breaststroke twice on Wednesday while competing at the World Military Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Sludnov's time in the final of the 50m breaststroke was 27.25 but the pad in lane 4 failed when he touched the wall. Due to the pad failure russian officials and organizers decided to allow Sludnov another shot at the world record.

After a short break, Sludnov swam the distance again and broke the record on this second attempt with his time of 27.36. However second performance had to be nullified, due to the fact that the judges forgot to reset the electronic timing system properly.
