Goodwill Games - Day 2 Report
Aug 30, 2001 - Women's Team Events
Match 3
United States v. Australia
The Australian women's team went into the match as the underdogs and were not expected to emulate the performance of their men who defeated the USA last night by thirty eight points; 93.5 to 55.5.
The match opened with easiest of wins for the home team in the medley relay giving them a seven - zip lead. The USA followed with a win in the next event, the 400 IM, and the scene was set for tit for tat struggle between the two for supremacy in Match 3; the winner would go on to a valued lead in the round robin series, with only one more match for each, before the medal matches for gold, silver or the bronze - fourth match up on day six.
Petria Thomas AUS was the iron woman for the Aussies, making a clean sweep of all fly events and putting the result out of question in the first relay, the 400 medley, with a fly split of 58.91, not her best, but strong enough to rank midway on the world all time best listing.
Dyana Calub backed Thomas taking the 50/100 double in the backstroke. Her 100m time was the highest IPS for the match with a rating of 976.
For the USA Kristen Caverly also won a treble with wins in the 200 and 400 IM's and the 200m Breaststroke. Lindsay Benko 200 Freestyle/ Backstroke double.
The final point score. Australia defeated the USA 79.5 to 69.5.

Match 4
Europe All-Stars v. World All-Stars
Outgunned in every department except middle distance freestyle the World All-Stars were no match for the Europe All-Stars.
The Europeans had first and second place in eight individual events. Oddly though the World All-Stars did likewise in the two events they won.
The best quality swim of the night was by Martina Moravcova in the 100m Butterfly, 58.30. Her PB 57.97 was swum at the 2000 Olympic Games in coming second to Inge de Bruijn. The match between Moravcova and Thomas should be worth watching when and if they both do the event Saturday, day four.
The final point score. Europe All-Stars 107 defeated World All-Stars 42.
