Match 5
Europe All-Stars v Australia

Australia started the match well with a win in an exciting 400 medley relay, which came down to a close finish on the last leg. Sarah Ryan had a body length lead over Inge De Bruijn as they dove in.

De Bruijn set out to haul in Ryan's lead, but the Aussie still had half as body length on the turn and held on to win with a great relay leg of 54.14 to 53.97 for the Dutch world and Olympic champion. Both relay legs were in world all time best class.

Two wins each by Yana Klochkova, 400 IM and 400 Free, and Beatrice Caslaru, 200 Breast and 200 IM, were the top point scorers for the European All-Stars. The Aussie top point scorers were the two breaststrokers Brooke Hanson and Leisel Jones who went one two in both the 50 and 100m races. The home team also made a clean sweep of the backstroke events, Calub the 50 and 100m and Clementine Stoney the 200.Petria Thomas raced well but the workload finally told tonight and she remained winless at the end of the match but never stopped trying.

On winning the 100m butterfly from Thomas, Martina Moravcova said: "I was feeling pretty good. I knew that Petria lots of races before this one so I had confidence."

Petria Thomas on her fitness: "I haven't been feeling too good for the past week or so and this race has really taken it out of me." Petria has been on antibiotics for the duration of the Games.

Inge De Bruijn on the Match: "It's a very exciting format and fun. Most of the girls have only ten minutes to rest between races, which is hard. I like it a lot more than the '98 Goodwill Games. The crowd here is fabulous."

And on why she keeps swimming: "I love my sport. I still feel like a fish in the water - swimming is in my heart, that's the most important thing. I still like to put up goals and get better at them. I'm still enjoying myself. I still feel like a young kid."
