Australian Head Coach Don Talbot Resigns

Sep 3, 2001  - Paul Quinlan

The resignation of Australian National Head Coach, Don Talbot, was announced on the Channel Nine 60 Minutes Program on day five of the Games. At sixty-eight years of age Talbot feels it timely that he moves on from the deck, having achieved his goals of bringing the Australian Swimming Team to the pinnacle of world swimming.

Reflecting on a satisfying career prior to the Goodwill Games Finals for his Men's and Women's Teams, the national team leader said: "In a couple of hours, when Australia face Team USA, I'm hoping it's going to be more satisfying. That's going to be a really close event. On paper it looks pretty good for us."

On Australia reaching the top of world swimming, he had this to say: " My thoughts are, where do we go next. We're number one right now but that can be very fleeting. We can't lay back. I remember years ago when we were number one. We got careless."

"We need to assess our program. I don't care how good you are, there are always holes in the program."

On the women's team chances for the gold medal today, he said: "We thought we were lucky to get thru the first match ahead of the USA. We have to be the underdog in the final."

Australian Swimming is not appointing an immediate successor to its most successful Head Coach.
