Vena Murray Retires as Executive Director of ASI

Sep 7, 2001  - Ian Hanson & Paul Quinlan

Vena Murray today announced her retirement as executive director of Australian Swimming Inc. after seven successful years at the helm of Australia's premier Olympic sport.

Mrs Murray started with Australian Swimming in 1990. She worked closely with the then executive director Craig McLatchey, before succeeding Simon Allatson as the executive director in 1995.

She has since guided the sport through its most successful era, culminating in Australia's crowning as the World Champions in Fukuoka last month.

The announcement coincides with the departure at the end of the year of National Head coach Don Talbot, who will step aside after 13 years as the National Coach of swimming in Australia.

"It has been a wonderful decade or more for me in Australian Swimming, through three Olympic campaigns. The World Championships in Perth in 1998 and of course the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

"The success of the teams this year really tops off what has been a wonderful era for Australian Swimming.

Australian Swimming president John Devitt said today: "Mrs Murray has seen Australian Swimming achieve the goal as number one swimming nation in the world with a well administered and well structured operation in her 11-years at Australian Swimming Inc, the last 7 years as the executive officer of the sport.

"On behalf of the board I would like to take this opportunity of congratulating Vena for her tireless years of hard work and thank her for her dedication to the sport of swimming.

"I know she has been planning a holiday for the last couple of years and finally she and husband David will get the chance to take it. Everyone at Swimming wishes her well."
