Australian Swimming to Investigate Touretski

Sep 15, 2001

Australian Swimming today announced its own investigation into the alleged possession of a small amount of stanozolol by Coach Gennadi Touretski, despite the dropping of charges and the awarding of court costs to the coach, by the the department of justice in the Australian Capital Territory.

The following is the press release from the Australian Swimming Federation:

Australian Swimming (ASI) will conduct an investigation into Gennadi Touretski, despite the dropping of criminal charges against the coach.

Touretski was charged with possessing a banned drug after police allegedly found anabolic steroids amongst property recovered following a robbery at his Canberra home in April.

After the charges were dropped in the ACT Magistrates Court, ASI announced it would be forced, under its own anti-doping policy, to investigate the allegations.

"It is part of ASI policy that an internal investigation has to be conducted," Australian Swimming executive director Vena Murray said in a statement.

"The results of our investigations should be completed and tabled at the board meeting scheduled for Nov 16 and 17."

ASI had suspended Touretski from its coaching staff from the recent world championships in Japan pending the court hearing.

The former Russian coach was immediately reinstated to his position as a coach at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
