NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- (10-12-01) The University of Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team earned a victory in its first dual meet of the season over Kalamazoo College 137-104 at the Rolfs Aquatic Center on Friday evening. The Irish captured first in eight of 13 events in the meet, including two impressive diving scores by junior Andy Maggio.

The Irish got off to a perfect start by taking first and second in the first event of the meet - the 200-yard medley relay. David Horak, Mike Koss, Adam Cahill and Frank Krakowski won the race in 1:38.10, followed by Dean Wolf, David Moisan, Matt Hyde and Matt Obringer in second at 1:39.87.

Notre Dame's distance group was up next and J.R. Teddy, Matthew Bertke and Elliot Drury ended up one-two-three, respectively. Teddy came on strong at the end, taking first place in 9:35.71.

Kalamazoo inched out a victory in the 200-yard and 50-yard freestyle races, but freshman David Moisan put the Irish back on their winning ways with a victory in the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.00).

The Notre Dame diving group, coming off an undefeated dual meet season in 2000-01, began this season in style. Maggio did not score for the team in the one-meter event, but posted the top point total of 323.85. Joseph Miller (257.47) and Tong Xie (246.97) also dove well in the one-meter competition.

Teddy returned to the pool after the diving break and won the 200-yard butterfly by seven seconds (1:56.55) over the nearest Kalamazoo competitor. Teammate Lucas Wymore took second in the 200 fly in 1:58.59.

Next was the 100 freestyle and freshman Frank Krakowski gave the Irish sprint corps a shot in the arm with a victory in his first collegiate race, touching first in 48.08. Another rookie posted a victory in the next event, as Dean Wolf won the backstroke in 1:57.28.

It was time for the Irish distance crew to shine once again in event 10, and sophomore Matt Obringer and junior Michale Flanagan did not disappoint. Obringer crusied to an easy victory in 4:43.87 and Flanagan out-touched a Kalamzoo swimmer at the wall to take second in 4:55.37.

Maggio capped off the event victories by the Irish in the three-meter diving competition, posting a score of 287.77.
